Decompression Therapy For Disc Pain/Low Back Pain in Olympia WA
At our chiropractic clinic in Olympia WA, we offer an amazing therapy for low back pain. It's called "spinal decompression" and it is as amazing as it sounds! The basics of the therapy is that it relieves pressure on the spine. We'll get into more about that in a minute. Let's quickly talk about causes of low back pain starting with a little anatomy lesson.
ANATOMY in Olympia WA
Your spine is made up of 33 bones stacked on top of each other called vertebrae. These vertebrae support your body weight as you sit, stand, and move around. The spine also acts as protection for the spinal cord that runs from the brain to your lower back. In between each vertebrae there is a fluid filled disk that is composed of about 86% water. These disks act as a cushion as the bones move around. Also between each vertebrae a nerve root comes off of the spinal cord and exits the spine on its way to the body.
Why does it hurt?
If you're experiencing pain in your lower back but haven't had any significant injury to the area then the for pain can vary greatly. But, what's usually happening is inflammation in the joints that make up the spine. When we stay in a position for a long period of time and our weight is pressing down on the vertebrae, the disks in between will begin to lose some of that fluid contained within. This then narrows the gap between the vertebrae which can cause the bones to rub together and not function properly. Muscles in the area become stiff to support the area. The nerves coming out of the spine can get trapped and irritated. Sometimes a part of the disk can get trapped within the joint which also puts pressure on the nerves, causing irritation.
How Evergreen Family Chiropractic Can Help
That was a lot of medical stuff. Now lets get simple and finally talk about what spinal decompression therapy is. At Evergreen Family Chiropractic in Olympia WA we have a special table designed to relieve low back pain. How it works is, you lay on your back and then special straps are used to secure your waist. A special cable is attached to the strap and a machine then applies specifically controlled tension, pulling on your lower back. This takes pressure off of your spine and the disks, allowing fluid to flow back into the disks. Throughout the process the machine pulls and releases periodically, creating a "pumping action" that encourages fluid to flow through the disks, giving them the nutrients they need. This makes the Disks healthier to be more supportive of the spine. The decompression takes the pressure off the bones and also off of the nerves. This decreases the irritation and allows the area to heal.
